A canopy bed is a bold and cool feature for any bedroom, from a Scandinavian to an industrial one, and it will always make a statement. Some of us prefer the bed frame left untouched, other like styling it to get more coziness, privacy and just cool decor. Here are the most popular ways to style your canopy bed and make it look ultimate.
Curtains
Let’s be real—canopy beds without curtains feel a bit…naked. At least that’s how mine looked when I first set it up. I loved the dramatic frame, but it didn’t feel finished until I added those dreamy, flowy curtains. I started with sheer white panels from IKEA (bless that place) and draped them loosely for a light, breezy look. It instantly gave my bedroom that “boutique hotel in Bali” vibe without breaking the bank.
But I’ve tried heavier curtains too—velvets and thick cotton in moody tones for the winter months. It felt cozier and blocked out early morning sun like a charm. One mistake I made early on though? I bought curtains that were too short. Rookie move. Always measure from the canopy bar to the floor, then buy. And if you’re using them for privacy, go with something semi-sheer or heavier. Sheer curtains are pretty but kinda pointless if you want to hide away with a book and ignore the world.

Lights
Okay, string lights on a canopy bed might feel like something you’d see in a teen’s Pinterest board—but don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it! I was skeptical, but after a late-night scroll-fest, I finally added some warm white fairy lights to the inner rim of my canopy. Game. Changer. It made the whole room glow like candlelight without any actual fire hazards.
I wrapped the lights loosely around the top bars and let some of them dangle down behind the curtains. It’s especially gorgeous with sheer panels because the light gets diffused and kinda shimmery. One thing I learned the hard way though—always get USB-powered lights with a timer. Otherwise you’ll be crawling under your bed every night trying to unplug them.
Also, skip the rainbow colors unless you’re going for party vibes. Stick to warm white or soft amber—it feels way more grown-up and cozy. Trust me, this tiny change made my bedroom the most relaxing spot in the house.

Botanicals
This one’s for the plant people—yes, you! Adding greenery to my canopy bed was honestly an accident. I had this pothos that was outgrowing its pot and nowhere else to put it… so I stuck it on a high shelf behind the bed. Within a few weeks, it started trailing down and wrapping itself around the frame. Total jungle vibes.
Eventually, I leaned into it. I added a faux ivy garland around the top rails and mixed in a couple of hanging planters at the corners. The combo of real and faux gave me that lush, wild look without the stress of keeping everything alive (because let’s be honest—some plants are divas).
If you’re not up for the watering routine, faux vines from craft stores work just fine and they photograph beautifully. Bonus points if you weave in fairy lights or tuck a few stems into your canopy drapes for that “Pinterest rainforest” energy. Just don’t go overboard or you’ll end up with leaves in your sheets. Been there.
