think this will wreck carpets? Any suggestion for how not to let it wreck it? (we have white rental carpets unfortunately)

I use those disk pads from home depot… They work great to protect flooring. They are used to place under the feet of tables and such for slidding over surfaces without damaging the floor. I used them on the bar i built and entertainment center and end tables, night stands, etc.

Do you think this can be done as a floating shelf, or without using the wall behind it?
This is a great idea to make a shelf without depending on weak drywall
