79 Wall Christmas Trees To Save The Space

Wall Christmas Trees To Save The Space

Every year I get the same question from friends: how do you decorate for Christmas when you barely have space for a normal tree? I laugh because I used to believe you either had a giant spruce in the living room or nothing at all. Then I moved into a small apartment with low ceilings and two overly curious cats who attacked anything even remotely glittery. That’s when I stumbled onto the magic of wall Christmas trees.

What surprised me most wasn’t the space-saving part, though that was pretty great. It was how creative you can get. You’re not stuck with one look — you can build something with lights, evergreen branches, rustic wooden sticks, shiny ornaments, or even something you dream up out of random scraps. The first time I made one, I didn’t even measure anything. Big mistake. My “tree” was more like a lightning bolt, but it still sparked this sense of, “Ok… I’m onto something here.”

So if you’re craving holiday vibes without sacrificing floor space or your sanity, let’s talk through the setups that have worked for me — and the very specific mistakes I wish someone had warned me about.

Lights Trees

The light tree was my very first attempt. I saw one on Pinterest — a clean triangle shape of fairy lights glowing against a white wall — and thought, “How hard could that be?” Spoiler: it’s easy, but only if you plan your anchor points. I sort of eyeballed it, slapped up a few command hooks, and stretched the LED string across. Halfway through, the shape drooped like melted cheese. Lesson learned: map your triangle first, even if you’re impatient.

Now I measure the width at the bottom (usually 70–90 cm), then the height (around 140–180 cm depending on wall space). I put hooks at the corners and one centered near the top where the star goes. Then I zig-zag the lights, starting wide at the base and narrowing as I go higher. Try warm white if you want cozy nighttime vibes, but cool white looks surprisingly chic with modern décor and metallic ornaments.

If you’re using USB lights, get the ones with a remote and timer so you don’t crawl behind furniture every night like a gremlin. Also, tape down the cables. I didn’t once, and my cat pulled the entire tree down like she was reenacting a scene from Mission Impossible. LED lights are safer and cooler to the touch, but still, don’t hang them too close to curtains or anything super flammable. Remember, you’re not trying to recreate a Vegas show, just a calm and magical holiday glow.

Stick Wall Christmas Trees

The stick tree became my favorite after a short winter hike. I came home with a handful of weathered branches and decided to make something rustic and Scandinavian. I cleaned them, sanded off splinters, and arranged them by length — longest at the bottom, shortest at the top. Honestly, the process felt like puzzle meditation. If you’re into farmhouse décor or minimalist Christmas vibes, you’ll love this.

The trick is spacing. Don’t cram the branches too close or the “tree” feels heavy and awkward. I leave about 10–12 cm between rows, which creates just enough breathing room. I tie each stick with natural jute cord and hang the whole structure from a single top anchor. It looks like a ladder-shaped Christmas tree — simple, earthy, kind of poetic. Add a few eucalyptus sprigs or baby pinecones and you’ll suddenly feel like a Scandinavian designer who charges €600 per minimalist wreath.

One year I painted the branches matte white for a snow-covered look, and it photographed beautifully… but it shed white dust everywhere because I used cheap paint. If you go that route, use acrylic spray paint and seal it with clear lacquer. Trust me, you don’t want your holiday cookies tasting like wood primer. Also, stick trees are great for pet owners — no tempting dangling tinsel, and no full evergreen for them to climb like a jungle gym.

Evergreen Wall Trees

If you want a traditional feel without the bulk of a full tree, evergreen wall Christmas trees are a game changer. The first time I made one, I used leftover garlands and real pine branches. I started with a triangle outline and layered the greenery inward until it looked full. The smell alone was worth it — the whole room felt like a forest cabin. I even joked that if Hallmark ever filmed a romance scene in my home, this would be where the meet-cute happens.

Go slow with evergreen placement. Start with a base — one long garland across the bottom, then another above, gradually decreasing length. Use floral wire or small hooks, not hot glue. I’ve seen people use tape and then cry two days later when everything falls in the middle of dinner. Real pine is heavier than you think and dries out faster in warm rooms, so if your space gets lots of heater action, faux garlands or eucalyptus hold up much longer.

To decorate, I tuck in cinnamon sticks, dried oranges, and a few wooden beads. It makes the whole wall look handcrafted and cozy. The key is not going ornament-crazy — flat trees don’t want bulky baubles that poke outward. Stick to light items or simply weave small fairy lights through the greenery. And don’t place it above fireplaces unless you’re a fireplace expert. Heat rises, needles dry, and nobody wants an early New Year’s bonfire on their living room wall.

Ornament-Only Wall Christmas Trees

This one is surprisingly bold. Think of arranging ornaments in the shape of a tree — nothing else. When I did this, it ended up looking like a modern art installation. I used clear adhesive hooks and spaced them carefully, starting from a wide 10-row base and slowly narrowing upward. When visitors came over, they assumed I bought it from a gallery. I didn’t tell them I spent two hours swearing at my measuring tape.

The secret is picking a theme. One year I used all gold ornaments with matte, shiny, and glitter finishes. Another year, I did forest green glass and tiny wooden beads for a softer natural vibe. If you mix too many textures or colors, the shape gets visually fuzzy. Small ornaments (3–5 cm) work far better than big balls meant for real trees. They don’t cast shadows and they sit closer to the wall, which matters a lot when you want a crisp silhouette.

As for hanging, I recommend either tiny command hooks or a pegboard system if you’re planning to reuse it year after year. Even better: use an acrylic or metal triangle panel and attach ornaments with wire. It sounds extra but trust me, taking everything down in one piece in January is the single greatest gift you can give yourself. No tangled ornament hell. Just… pop it off the wall and store it.

Other Ideas

Sometimes a project starts because you just don’t have the right supplies. One year, I ran out of branches and lights, so I built a tree with washi tape. I made a simple triangle shape, added diagonal stripes, and stuck a paper star on top. It was shockingly cute and completely renter-friendly. And when it was time to take it down, it left zero marks. No sanding, no patching, no tears.

Another year, I made a macramé tree from cotton cords. It was calming, like braiding hair, and looked gorgeous with a few wooden beads woven in. You can also do a shelf tree — stack 3–5 floating shelves in a triangle layout and decorate each tier. I once used them to display candles, tiny ornaments, and one bowl of Christmas cookies (which mysteriously disappeared… still blaming my partner).

If you’re into family traditions, try a photo memory tree. Print your favorite snapshots — winter trips, pets in goofy sweaters, childhood gift moments — and pin them in a tree shape. It becomes this emotional holiday gallery wall that everyone gravitates toward. Not perfect, not symmetrical, but very real. And that’s the entire point: your wall Christmas tree should carry your personality more than anything else.

Final Thoughts

I never thought I’d enjoy decorating for the holidays more without a traditional tree, but wall Christmas trees changed everything. They make a small space feel festive, they’re pet-safe, and they give you permission to play with your décor style. Some years I go rustic with sticks, other years I get fancy with ornaments or evergreen. And the best part? You can reinvent it every December without storing a gigantic fake tree in the closet.

If you try one of these ideas, don’t chase perfection. Start simple, adjust as you go, and enjoy the process — even the messy parts. That’s where the memories live. And who knows? Your wall-mounted creation might end up becoming the heart of your home every year.
